So-o, it's only forty days and counting until Christmas day! That most wonderful time of the year when we'll be given a vacation to sleep and see our families and eat and most importantly READ. ...What, I'm supposed to eat and sleep during the rest of the year, too? Oh well. Anyhow, that's where the challenge comes in. See, I'm looking to expand my reading vistas and try new books, and I thought it would be fun to see how many books can get through during my three week vacation. So here's the deal: respond to this thread with one book title and, if I haven't read it, I'll put it on my list for the break. We'll see how many I can get through before the time's up! Some ground rules: - I must be able to get the book through my local library--and it must be in English.
- Nothing over-the-top explicit. Let's keep it classy, here.
- You must have read the book yourself.
- I can't have read the book before.
- I'm going to go ahead and veto books about sick kids; Fault in Our Stars and Summer to Die sort of thing. Why? Because I hate coming-of-age stories and I hate stories that are all about illnesses, and dangnammit, it's my challenge!
And if any brave soul wants to join me in the challenge, I'll give you a book too: Ender's Game. It's a sci-fi novel about kids who are training for war through zero-gravity strategy games.

PS You don't have to go with my tastes at all, but in case you're interested, I tend towards epic fantasy when I'm given the choice. Right now, for instance, I'm re-re-re-reading The Hobbit, and reading Robin Hobb's book Ship of Magic. I'll also do classics, sci-fi, mysteries, or anything you guys give me!

Only 1 book title? I could give you so many! Okay, I can do this... I think you should read (granted you haven't read it already) The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. It is so good, a fantasy/adventure kind of book and there was recently a movie based on it that has came out. Though I adored the series long before then. But, it's the first in a series, so I'm hoping by giving you this you will then continue to read the entire series.  Have fun and good luck with your challenge! -Tiana |

You should start reading "Wheel of Time" collection It's a series of 14 books and it's something different. I don't know if you like this specific genre of books, but you can google the title and decide for yourself I really enjoyed reading those books though I have to warn you you won't be able to read all those 14 books in just 3 weeks XD Good luck with your challenge Aeidail |

Oh, City of Bones has been on my 'to read' list a long time! That's definitely getting read. Aeidailgirl, I LOVE WoT! It was actually what got me into fanfiction in the first place; the world was so amazing, I decided it needed more characters, so I went and made some of my own. That does mean I've read the books before, though, so you'll have to come up with another book for the challenge... |

It's a pity you don't understand portuguese because there are some really good books I would strongly recommend such as "Saga das Pedras Mágicas" (The Saga of the Magic Stones)and "Crónicas de Allaryia" (Allaryia Chronicles). I'm not sure if the Allaryia Chronicles have been translated into English though because of this: www.allaryia.com/pearnon/?page_id=420 (link to the author's official website) Nevertheless, I would recommend reading reading "The Mists of Avallon" (you've probably have already read it  ) |

hmmm only one book suggestion?
I just finished a young adult book called "Eon: Dragoneye Reborn" it does have a sequel called "Eona".
It takes place in what I would assume is ancient china and centres around the story of Eon and these 12 magical dragons that control the weather and hua (lifeforce) of everything. I really enjoyed it!!
That's my recommendation.

Eon looks fun! Dragons and China and magic--I'm in. I haven't read Mists of Avalon before, although I've certainly heard about it. To tell the truth, I've avoided them for awhile because I've heard the series bashes Catholicism, which is a pet peeve of mine (if I wanted religious baiting I'd read the New York Times). Still, I don't know how true said rumor is, and either way a deal's a deal, so if you say Mists of Avalon, I'll give it a go. Like I said, this whole challenge is about getting me out of my comfort zone, so good job! |
